WETDOG's "Arms Race"

WETDOG has just finished and submitted the short film, "Arms Race" for the 48 Hour Film Festival.

We are incredibly excited and proud of our entry, which was accomplished by an amazing cast and crew over a grueling 48 hour stretch. The cast included knockout performances by Barry Kneller, Matty W. Kelley, Christine Herman, Brian Farrow, Paul Fortey, Dan Topjian, and Nick Provost.

The crew was invaluable, including the editing of Jimmy Dietz, makeup and props by Gina Nero, Jim Smith's Direction, and the script by Billy Daley.

The screening of the film took place last night at the Kendall Square Cinema, Kendall Sq. in Cambridge. "Arms Race" killed, and we expect to be at the "Best Of" screening at Coolidge Corner on June 7th!

BREWING CONFLICT
Ethiopia Battles Starbucks
Over Rights to Coffee Names
Chain's Image Rattled
By Trademark Spat;
Hints of Chocolate, Rum
By JANET ADAMY and ROGER THUROW
March 5, 2007

... The world's largest coffee chain is locked in a trademark dispute with Ethiopia, one of the world's poorest countries. The battle was spurred by a rare aggressive attempt by a developing country to assert intellectual-property rights.

WAR OF VIDEOS
The humanitarian group Oxfam <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0N5wzr5xeWI> 1 drew attention to the dispute between Ethiopia and Starbucks in a video posted on YouTube, filmed during a "Starbucks Day of Action" in mid-December. (Watch the video. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0N5wzr5xeWI> 2) Two days after that video was posted, on Dec. 20 Starbucks posted its own video <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dteTrEM7mlM> 3, in which Dub Hay, the company's top coffee buyer, discussed the dispute and explained the company's relations with coffee farmers. (Watch the video. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dteTrEM7mlM> 4) In early January, another posting by Starbucks <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHP-7lE9mpY> 5 showed how the company helped support coffee farmers on one Tanzania estate by funding the construction of a cistern. (Watch the video. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHP-7lE9mpY> 6) At the end of February <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DiWK81j7fg> 7, Bob Winter, a D.C. lawyer representing Ethiopia in its efforts to trademark the names of three of its coffee-producing regions, posted a response. Help Oxfam on Saturday!

Earlier this month, Starbucks CEO Jim Donald met Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi to discuss Ethiopia's ownership of its coffee names and the benefits that ownership could bring to the 15 million poor Ethiopians who depend on coffee for their livelihood. Unfortunately, Starbucks has yet to agree that Ethiopia should own its coffee names.Join Oxfam and thousands of others around the globe as we amplify the voices of Ethiopian farmers at a Starbucks day of action on December 16th.
